About Marlee Jean's Studio
About the Artist
I’m Marlee, an Australian light-driven contemporary artist, working across atmospheric abstraction and representational realism.
My work explores light, atmosphere and emotion—capturing moments that exist somewhere between the seen and the felt.
Light is the thread that connects my practice. I’m drawn to the way it can transform an ordinary landscape or subject; softening an edge, illuminating a detail, shifting colour or creating a moment that makes us stop and look a little longer.
My atmospheric works evolve through layered textures and intuitive mark-making, often allowing familiar landscapes to soften into something more dream-like or remembered. Rather than recreating a place exactly, I’m interested in capturing the feeling of being there—the movement, stillness and fleeting shifts in light that stay with us.
At other times, that same fascination draws me toward greater realism and detail. Across painting and drawing, I move between these approaches instinctively, allowing the subject and the light within it to determine how the work unfolds.
At its core, my practice is about creating presence—work that feels grounding, expressive and quietly impactful, whether rendered through softened atmosphere or careful observation.
As a mum and artist, creativity has become both a personal outlet and a way to build something meaningful—something that connects beyond the canvas.
Alongside my original works, I also create detailed portraits on commission, with a focus on light, expression, connection and the finer intricacies of each subject.
